Andrew Rugg-Gunn (OD 1952)

Congratuations to Andrew who was awarded the International Association for Dental Research Gold Medal in 2023. This is the Association’s highest award. 

“For the past 30+ years, Rugg-Gunn has had an advisory role with the World Health Organization (WHO). He served as an advisor regarding revisions of ‘Oral Health Surveys, Basic Methods’ (now in its 5th edition), and the revision of ‘Fluorides and Oral health’ (Technical Report, 1994), published in 2016. He also co-authored the WHO publication ‘Milk Fluoridation for the Prevention of Dental Caries’, (2009), and two WHO documents on early childhood caries. Additionally, he was part of a WHO team invited to Beijing in 2000 by the Chinese Ministry of Health to advise on national fluoride policy.”

Freddy Paske (OD 1999) 

Freddy recently hosted an exhibition of wildlife art from Australia to Africa entitled SAFARI on Percy Street, London. Although the exhibition closed in November, you can view Freddy’s beautiful works online at freddypaske.com/safari.

Max Hembrow (OD 2008)

It was wonderful to see Max Hembrow‘s (OD 2008) work celebrated at The Battersea Autumn AAF, London, last month.

His work combines elements of the classical European tradition and School of Paris Modernism established by Picasso, Braque, Cézanne and Matisse, with a particular interest in musical motifs and the treatment of the figure through forms of psychological analytical cubism.

Max lays down layers of paint and marks, working intuitively and strategically as a response to music. The works explore tensions between time, marks, colour, and composition.

Tom George (OD 2008)

It has been an incredible year for Tom, most recently taking silver in the men’s pairs at the Paris Olympics. Discussing sport in education, Tom features alongside fellow OD Maia Bouchier (OD 2012) on the first episode of the School’s new podcast, The Educational DilEmma.

Tom Guthrie (OD 2012)

In July, Tom Guthrie endured the Arch2Arc challenge, each running seven marathons in seven days with four teammates. The challenge was in the name of Morgan MacRae, brother of teammate Iwan, a 21 year old semi-pro rugby player who suffered a cardiac arrest. After prolonged CPR from his girlfriend Kitty, seventeen minutes deceased, four defibrillations and three days in a coma; he made an incredible recovery and is back playing elite rugby less than a year later. Following his recovery, Morgan launched social media movement My SIC-D and Me that champions CPR training in the workplace, sports clubs etc… he just needed some enthusiastic fundraisers!

The challenge began beneath Marble Arch where the runners set off south covering 110km in their first two days before reaching Newhaven port, where an overnight ferry would arrive in Dieppe at 3am. Running continued at 3:30am on less than two hours sleep and continued for another 5 days before their arrival at the Arch de Triomphe.

The boys successfully raised over £28,000 for their heart-related charities, grossly exceeding their initial £5,000 target. They said “although we suffered two broken legs, seemingly infinite blisters and even the odd hangover, it was definitely worth it”.
